The World Wide Web Consortium, otherwise known as the W3C, is an international standards organization that sets and maintains standards for everything related to the World Wide Web.
Following appropriate standards is important as the Web becomes more complex and more interactive. Different browsers and even different versions of the same browser implement things differently. The end result is that things don't always look or function the same in every version of every browser on every operating system.
